APDR/APDIR Joint Statement on Interviews – May 15, 2024

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) previously issued a statement on residency interviews, meant to help programs decide what is best for their institution. While the APDR and APDIR understand that all programs have their own unique needs, both organizations support the following as best practices for radiology:

Interviews:
  • For the reasons delineated by the AAMC, whenever possible, all interviews should be conducted in a virtual format.  Best practice is to interview and assess candidates utilizing a consistent format.
  • If in-person interviews are offered, a virtual option should be available to applicants and steps should be taken to ensure equitable consideration of applicants regardless of interview format chosen.
  • Programs should determine whether the need for in-person interviews is primarily for the candidates to learn about the program or for the program to assess the candidates.  If it is for the candidates to learn about the program, consider program visits as below.
If programs feel that they need to allow candidates to visit and assess the program by visiting in person …
Program Visits:
  • Programs should consider offering post-ranking program visits to applicants who may wish to see a location in-person prior to finalizing their rank list.
  • Programs should take steps to ensure that visits are not considered in candidate assessment (e.g., finalizing rank list prior to visit).
  • Programs should make applicants aware that visits are optional and have no bearing on the assessment or rank of the applicant.
